Choose Life

It was late summer 1987 and a young teenage couple, that had already been prone to making mistakes, found themselves, at 18 and 19 years of age, faced with another life altering decision.  At the age of 16 and 17 this couple had already given birth to a beautiful daughter and were trying to figure out just how to make that work with both of them still in school and no way to make ends meet.  Now, just a year later they found themselves back in the same situation.

This time around they did not think they could make it work with another daughter and did not even want to try explaining to their parents that they made the same mistake twice.  Both of us had decided that an abortion would be the best bet and were beginning to inquire and pursue that avenue.  At that same time we had both been going to church regularly and had started to really get in to the Christian rock scene.

We would find ourselves at a Christian Rock concert and that night we were still contemplating our decision, when on came a song that would have an everlasting impact on our young lives. The song's words spoke to us both immensely.  They touched us in such a way that we knew we could not go through with the abortion.  We decided to keep the child and it was directly a result of one Christian rock band and one song. That band was called Barren Cross and the song was called 'Killers Of The Unborn'.

Here are the lyrics to Killers Of The Unborn, by Barren Cross:
Lay her down, commence to drill
A primo murder, the legal kill
I am a child about to die
My mother does not hear my cry, no

(Chorus)
Killers of the unborn, killers
Killers of the unborn, stop the killing

Injection starts to work its way
I don't feel love, I just feel pain
I'm getting weaker, my poison blood
And death surrounds me like a flood

(Chorus)

The operation is over
I'm now in pieces in a garbage bag
Guilt will now take over
'Cause where is the relief you thought you had
The shame and tears she bears
The scar of guilt she is going to wear
But he can forgive her
If she gives her life to the Savior
No, no, they're gonna kill me
I don't want to die, just let me be
No, no, I feel the pain
I feel, I feel the pain, no.

THE WORD:  "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you..." (Jer. 1:5)  "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb." (Psalm 139:13)  "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." (John 10:10)

THE CHALLENGE:  Oh friend, what a challenge this brother's story and the above Scriptures present to us!  God is a God of LIFE.  Death is the enemy.  Jesus came that we might have LIFE and have it full, rich and abundant! (John 10:10)   The particulars of Bill's wonderful testimony are rooted in the circumstance of two teens who had to literally choose between life and death for their unborn baby (I'm really glad they chose life by the way!), but we ALL face choices between death and life, living and dying - all the time.  Will I choose to spread and attitude of life and love at work today or will I spread a spirit of death.  Will I choose to rest in Christ-knowing that he loves me and will provide for all of my needs today (this is life!) or will I try to handle all of my problems and challenges on my own and thus-allow them to choke the life right out of me?  You see, choosing life is more than just a pro-life vs. pro abortion issue, it's an everyday mind set, an attitude of the heart, a world view.  As Christians we serve the "author of life" (Acts. 3:15) … the one who is the way, the truth and THE LIFE… the one who came that we might have life (John 10:10).  Christ gave us physical life at birth, Spiritual ("eternal" rich, full, purpose filled) life at conversion, and He will grant us immortal life in the world to come (1 Cor. 15, Rev. 22).  So, choose life today.  Choose to really live life to the fullest in Christ today!  You'll be glad you did.  And of course, the first step in doing that is receiving Christ as your Lord and your Savior.  If you have any questions about what it means to do that, email me at pastorbrad@aol.com.
