Willful sin... No forgiveness?

This article is basically and email exchange I had with a bro about Heb. 10:26.

The Question...

"For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins" Hebrews 10:26 (KJV)

This was under the old covenant, right?

Thanks and God Bless!
In Christ,
Metal Brother

My Reply...
Great question Bro!

Here's the deal with the book of Hebrews.  It was written to... as the title says... "Hebrews" (or Jews)... many of whom were struggling with letting go of the religion of the OT... the sacrificial system, etc.  The writer of Hebrews--throughout the book-- is saying, essentially, you've got to move on .. fully trust Jesus all the way... let go of the old covenant and embrace the New Covenant!  Let go of the old sacrificial system where you had to sacrifice a bull, a goat, a lamb, etc..  every day!!!!!  And trust fully in the ONCE--FOR ALL TIME--sacrifice of our GREAT HIGH PRIEST/SACRIFICAL LAMB OF GOD----JESUS!  So, in this passage he says (I have it here in the New Living Translation)... I included a few more verses so you could get  feel for the context of what's being said...

Heb. 10:21-26
21  And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God's people,
22  let us go right into the presence of God, with true hearts fully trusting him. For our evil consciences have been sprinkled with Christ's blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.
23  Without wavering, let us hold tightly to the hope we say we have, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.
24  Think of ways to encourage one another to outbursts of love and good deeds.
25  And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage and warn each other, especially now that the day of his coming back again is drawing near.
26  Dear friends, if we deliberately continue sinning after we have received a full knowledge of the truth, there is no other sacrifice that will cover these sins.
27  There will be nothing to look forward to but the terrible expectation of God's judgment and the raging fire that will consume his enemies.

I.e.  In the statement "if we deliberately continue sinning after we have received a full knowledge of the truth, there is no other sacrifice that will cover these sins."  the author of Hebrews is saying, "If ya'll ignore Jesus---and just go on living without trusting him--even after you fully understand who he is and what he did for you... there is no sacrifice in the world that can cover that!

Hope that helps bro!
Blessings,
pb

Metal Brother's reply...
But,now under the new covenant,if we willfully sin after knowing truth we can be forgiven, right?  Is it referring to if somebody totally quits attempting to live right?

God Bless!
M.B.

Thanks for all your help!!!!!

MY Response...

M.B... this passage is more about choosing to trust Christ or not... "continuing in sin" is NOT a reference to isolated times of sinning... like when you know you shouldn't look twice at that pretty girl and you do it anyway... or whatever... when you do that you just confess it, repent.. receive God's forgiveness and walk on...  THIS passage is drawing a line in the sand and saying, --GET IN or GET OUT... but you can't sit on the fence anymore... now that you have FULL KNOWLEDGE of who Jesus is--you either bow your knee to him as Lord and Savoir and rely fully on him.. or you turn away--and for those who turn away--THERE IS NO SACRIFICE that will atone for  making that choice to walk on in sin... willfully.

Does that help?
Blessings,
PB

Metal Brother's reply...
I think I understand what you're saying about the passage,Do you mean when people turn away from Christ, and refuse to accept him, there is no sacrifice for their sins?

God Bless!
