Pastor Brad's FREE Metal Guitar Lessons The BLUES Scale By this point, you're pretty familure with how my lessons work.  You also ought to be pretty comfortable with what a scale is and how to go about learning a new one.  So, here's the blues scale...  to be totally honest, I'm not 100% cetain that that's the name of this scale... but It's what I've always heard it called... The blues scale is really nothing but a pentatonic scale with an "extra" note thrown in... I'll make the "extra note green it will stand out... Check out the tab below and you'll see what I mean. By the way, this scale is in the key of "A"... note that the "tonic" or "root" note is an "A" (i.e. the first note of the scale). E------------------------------------------------------------------------ B------------------------------------------------------------------------ G------------------------------------------------------------------------ D----------------------5--7--------------------------------------------- A-----------5--6--7----------------------------------------------------- E----5--8----------------------------------------------------------------          i   r   i   m  r   i   r HOW I USE THIS SCALE:  That little "extra" note adds a cool "feel" to the scale...   I throw this note in all the time when I'm zipping through a pentatonic run and come to the 5th string...  As you practice it over and over again... it will become second nature for you to use this blues scale in your lead playing. As you play all of your scales... experiment throwing in "extra notes"... see if you can discover some cool patterns that you like--never mind if you know the official name of the scale pattern you just discovered... who cares--as long as it sounds cool and you know how to use it!  "I'm not trying to insult any of you who are 'music theory nuts'...  I know there is real value in understanding the 'technical' end of things.  I just never got into it."
