Pastor Brad's 80s Christian Metal Guitar World!
How has God used Heavy Metal in your life?

My original post @ The Christian Metal Realm
Perhaps you read my earlier poste about that site where that dude was saying that Christian Rock was satanic... Anyway... I thought I'd open it up and let us share how God has used Christian metal music/bands to touch our hearts for HIS GLORY! I know Styper's IN GOD WE TRUST had a huge impact on my life... I was into Stryper way before I was a Christian... simply because they rocked! And when the I.G.W.T. album came out... I wore it out... and God just spoke to my heart through the messages in those songs! I wouldn't say that it was that album alone that led me to faith in Jesus... but it played a role! And I thank the Lord for it... and for many other Christian Metal Albums that have blessed my life and encouraged me in my walk with the Lord! Okay... enough of me... How about you?

Re: How has God used Metal in your life?

Christian Metal was what saved me! Man, I still remember. I was hooked on porn, I was being a dumbass at school, I was listening to rather bad things (and music). Then, this one Sunday, my pastor made this rather cool sermon. I don't remember what about, but it was enough to stick in my head. That day, when I went to the internet radio station to listen to all that bad music, I couldn't. So I tuned in to CMRadio- THE EDGE, a christian hard music station. I heard Extol and the early, heavy versions of some Demon Hunter songs, and I was like "Wow, these (especially Extol) bands blow '____' and '_____' out of the water!" Then I read Extol's lyrics, and that's what saved me! Just so very poetic and spirity filled. I've been truly reborn since then.

Since the subject doesn't say 'Christian Metal..', I can say God has not only used metal played by Christians in my life. I believe that all good things are to the glory of God and that way more often than not He uses somebody who is searching with good intentions in heart for His glory and to make a positive force in the world. While Christian metal too often (not all the time) gets caught up in trying to please the church crowd and loses some things, which is unfortunate, there are non Christians who have put amazingly moving, positive material out there with true heart and soul. God is the author of this. I hear His muse in so much music (no blasphemous stuff). Different music ministers different things to me; some music helps me to move on from my past, some music reminds me that there are many struggles in the world, but all you have to do is do your best, some music ministers to me the love and understanding another human being is capable of (something I have had problems with feeling at times), some music preaches to me the importance of the world 'Rebellion', and how important it is to apply that to the evils within the world, and so on and so forth, all pertaining to keeping me on the right path in life. Metal is the most honest and most pure and most emotionally intense style of music that has helped me in this way, made by both Christians and non Christians alike. I will provide a small list of bands who have had some of the most impact on me:

Queensr˙che
Freedom Call
Darkseed
Saint
Running Wild (after the poser early 80's phase, they became incredibly positive)
Sacred Warrior
Savatage
maudlin of the Well
Rage
W.A.S.P. (more inconsistent than any of these, but their best stuff...wow)
Believer
Megadeth
Rhapsody
Death
Lengsel

I grew up in a Christian home, and my Mom took us to church as kids, but I just didn't get it. I thought being a relatively good person was good enough. When I heard Vengeance's Human Sacrifice album, I couldn't understand what Roger was saying, so I had to read the lyrics. Wow. Eye-opening to say the least. Those songs got me to check out what the bible says about sin and salvation, and got me headed in the right direction. I'm very grateful to God for those guys (even Roger) and for Christian music in general for pointing me to Jesus.

I don't ever want absolute proof about God's existence or His love. If I had proof I couldn't excercise my faith.

He's kept me alive through the use of metal. There have been a few times in my adult life where I was so depressed that I literally wanted to die and was seriously thinking of suicide. Since I didn't feel that I could talk to anyone about this without them thinking I was just downright insane, there were a few songs along the way that are my personal favorites because these songs gave me the strength to hold on until God and I had everything worked out.

Some of these songs would be:

"On My Knees" by Rose
"This Is A Call" by Thousand Food Krutch
"Boys Don't Cry" by Plumb

God has also used metal to teach me that all Christians are unique and need someone unique to tell them about Jesus. We can just be ourselves because that is the way God created us. He gave us our likes & dislikes and He gave us our passions. We can use those to reach people similar to us if we are obedient to His calling.

Metal is awesome! God is the most awesome!!!!

I grew up in a Christian family too. And very early on I became a metal addict  My older borthers (especially one of them) was a bit into metal, so I was raised on Kiss, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Accept etc. But I always had this eerie feeling that this might not be the best influences to my young mind (you know, this was back when people still thought KISS stood foor Knights in Satan's Service!  ) Then one day one of my brothers brought in a Jerusalem album. And later on Petra. Cool stuff, I thought, but it wasn't long before this was not nearly heavy enough for my tastes. Then one day a milestone: My brother played me a tape of Soldiers Under Command!!! Stryper was the first Christian band I really loved. And they really showed me that it is possible to love Christ and metal! After that I got into Barren Cross, Bloodgood, Saint, Messiah Prophet, Deliverance, Vengeance Rising etc. But the 2 most important bands for me, lyrically, were Stryper and Vengeance.

Reach inside of me/Far beneath the encasing of ashes/Bleeding red/Still showing signs of life/Remove the darkness/Take me away/A Stream of Hope destroy this corrupted cell/Purification
-"Torn Within" As I Lay Dying

He turned my ways from darkness to light. I´m from messed up family and my life was going to direction of total destruction. I was afraid and unsecure kid. I didn´t care anything about everything. All that mattered was sic - and in that point of my life I was introduced to Holy Soldier, Whitecross and REZ... music NEVER saved me, but it surely gave me something else to search for. Today I´m serving the lord in my church, reaching out for kids... that´s the story. Amen.

...weeeeellllll...  it was Stryper's To Hell With The Devil that helped me make my decision to give my life to Jesus. Without bogging this thing down with details, let's just say that, 1) I was a metalhead through and through, 2) my life was heading down a destructive spiral, not due to the music mind you, but I'm sure the nihilism wasn't helping much...

...I got the tape as one of the freebees through the Columbia Tape Club (this was the 80s..."tapes" were small plastic things that we used to play music on...all you younger metal heads, ask your parents...), and the strong Christ-centric message, great music, and particularly the song "More Than A Man" helped sway me...

...and to go further, in my fledgling "baby Christian" days, it was the scripture references in the liner notes of Petra, Vengeance Rising, Mortification, and other Christian rock and metal discs, along with a good Life Application study Bible, that helped me grow deeply in my personal relationship with the Everlasting Father, His Son, and the living Holy Spirit Who dwells with me constantly...His Name be forever praised, and CRANK THE STEREO!!!
