Pastor Brad's FREE Metal Guitar Lessons! How to tune your guitar This is lesson two in my recomended track for learning to jam! Again--this is pretty fundamental stuff... but FUNDAMENTALS are so important! You can build a 25 million dollar mansion, but if it's got a lousy foundation... it's gonna be junk! In the same way, you can be a gifted virtuoso on the guitar... but if you're not in tune... junk! Metal Guitar Lessons Guitar Jams PB's Metal Music Reviews Bio/Press Kit Christianity Links Contact Demo Club Learning to tune a vital part of playing. Everything I will teach you about playing is assumes that your guitar is in tune. You can play every chord, scale or riff perfectly, but if you're not in tune--forget it! It's gonna sound really bad. So how do you tune your guitar? You've got two options. 1. BUY AN ELECTRONIC TUNER. I don't know, call me an old fogy traditionalist... but I don't like electronic tuners. I've never owned one... they work okay, but you wind up kind of being dependent on them. But... they will allow you to tune. 2. LEARN TO TUNE! This is the way to go! Here are 2 benefits to paying biting the bullet and taking the time to learn how to tune: 1) You'll sharpen your ear/listening skills--this is a huge plus... learning to listen/hear notes it huge! 2) You'll be able to tune to any song/player! If you get to the point that you're listenint to cds and striving to copy other players--you'll note right away--that not all players tune to a standar "E"... many tune to "Eb" or even "D"... and if you ever go to jam with a buddy and there's no "electronic tuner" available ... NO PROB... you just tune your gitar to his/hers! STEP BY STEP... How to tune: 1. Tune your "low" E string... to a cd, piano, other guitar, etc. I.e. turn your tuning key until the tone of your "low" E string is identical to the tone of the cd, piano note, etc. 2. Go to the 5th fret and play your "low" E string... that is an "A" note... this is the note you need to match for the next string down ("A string"). 3. Now go to the 5th fret on the "A" string... this is a "D" note... yep, you guessed it the next string down is the "D" string! 4. Repeat this process for the next string... go to 5th fret on the "D" string... this will be a "G" note... the next string down is the "G" string (it's the first non-wound string). 5. DIFFERENT FRET!!!!! When you go to tune the "B" string (the second to last string) you do things slightly different. You go to the 4th fret and play a "B" note on the "G" string... and tune the "B" string to that tone. 6. Finally, for the last string... which is called the "High E string"... you go back to the fifth fret. Play the 5th ("B") string at the fifth fret... this is an "E" note... tune your bottom ("High E string) to that tone. Here is a simple chart to help you keep the strings straight: E -------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the "high" or "lightest" E string. B--------------------------------------------------------------------- G--------------------------------------------------------------------- D-------------------------------------------------------------------- A--------------------------------------------------------------------- E--------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the "low" or "heaviest" E string. ENCOURAGEMENT!!!! DON'T GET DISCOURAGED!!! It WILL take some time to become comfortable with this. EVERYBODY feels like a fish out of water at first! Just keep at it... YOU WILL GET IT! . |
