When I think of that word I tend to think of guys like Satriani, Vai and Malmsteen. Well, Pastor Brad and friends are also in that same school of instrumental guitar rock. The difference is that Pastor Brad is a bit more melodic and probably a bit bluesier than those guys as well. Think more along the lines of Steve Morris, or even Van Halen without vocals. Each song on this CD tells a story. Whereas some instrumental CDs tend to be a bunch of riffs for the guitarist to lay down some choice wankey, Pastor Brad has actually written songs for which the guitar leads to tell a story over. Yes, the songs actually have hooks. Brad brought along some friends to help him out as well. Fellow shredders Jon Hooper (Unforsaken), Andy England and David Jacob all lay down some choice chops as well. While the entire CD is a solid listen, a couple songs that really stood out to me was "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and "Angels We Have Heard on High". "Holiday, instrumental, shred, metal fest. Gotta love that! This CD was sent to me
in December, so it was the perfect CD to jam during the Christmas Season. However,
it's also not so Christmasy that I can't enjoy it year round either. Musically,
this is the type of album that you would expect to be released on Shrapnel
Records, however, Pastor Brad is an independent artist that has been releasing
several albums a year without the help of a record label. Brad is a great guitarist,
with plenty of chops, but he's not overly wanky either. His soloing is
tasty and fits the songs, making for a more interesting listen for the average
music fan. “Christian Metal Realm” is a track in which seven guitarists and five vocalists make guest appearances. This song is unusual as it was a collaboration of musicians from the on-line discussion board of the same name. (www.christianmetalrealm.com) This song is an out and out slug fest of guitars and a standout track on the CD. However, it's not so different from the rest of the CD as to ruin the overall flow of the album. While Pastor Brad's "Heavenly Shred" is an album with a Christmas/holiday theme, it is not one of those albums that will only appeal to listeners around December 25th. This is a solid album of guitar instrumentals His music will appeal to fans of Joe Satriani and James Byrd. Scott Waters No Life Til Meta Pastor Brad's latest instrumental CD, Heavenly Shred, offers heavy-rocking, guitar shredding renditions of classic Christmas songs and hymns, plus original compositions. Guitar histrionics are front and center throughout the album, from fast-firing, full-shred solos to dual-guitar harmonies and more. Pastor Brad provides much of the fretboard fireworks, plays bass on most of the tracks; and also recorded, arranged, mixed and mastered the album in his own studio. Several guest shredders help out as well, including Jeff Garner, Mario Barisic and David Wallimann; Jim Griffin contributes both guitar and bass work, while Saint's Dee Harrington plays bass on one track. Listeners will hear scorching metal guitar interpretations of such Christmas carols as “Oh Little Town of Bethlehem,” “O Come O Come Emmanuel,” “Deck the Halls,” “Silent Night,” “Joy to the World” and “Carol of the Bells.” Pastor Brad and friends also offer thunderous spins on Christian hymns such as “Nothing But the Blood,” “Holy Holy Holy,” “I’ll Fly Away” and “Oh How I Love Jesus.” Inspired by a Christian heavy metal internet forum, Pastor Brad’s original composition “Christian Metal Realm” features cameo guitar and voice contributions from nine of that forum’s members... and another original instrumental, “Psalm 33:3,” ends the album. I have spent more than twenty years enjoying the instrumental shredding by such talents as Vinnie Moore, Tony MacAlpine, David Chastain, Joey Tafolla, Vai, Satriani, et., etc. So, I approached this CD with much curiosity. Low and behold, this CD shreds… YES, smoking, blazing riffs and scales, all done with finesse and beauty. Pastor Brad certainly has the chops and blasts through what he calls 80's style metal with relative ease. Richard Lynch and Dee Harrington of Saint fame appear on this recording too. As with "Shred", Pastor Brad and a host of friends offer a mix of tempos, textures and sounds. While Brad can shred with the best of them, he offers plenty of emotion in his playing as well. What tends to turn off many to instrumental guitar shed is that technique and speed are often more important than emotion and feel. Brad offers both here. "Tear Down the Walls" for instance, is an upbeat number with plenty of fast finger work on the fretboard. However, not unlike the very first Joe Satriani disc, there is a sense of melody and emotion to the song as well. Brad's guitar become the vocalist in each song, telling a story rather than just making idol noise. This is true of the entire disc. I didn't grow bored with this album, as I sometimes tend to do with instrumental albums. Brad lets some of his influences show on a few of these songs. "The Conquest" starts out with a distinct AC/DC vibe to it. "A lighter shade of melancholy" is an acoustic based track that reminded me a bit of Kansas or Yes at times. As well, "Riffage" brings in a bit of a 1970's influence. "Rain" offers a more laid back, melancholy feel with a mix of clean guitars and distortion layered with some smokin' guitar work. "Reshredded" finishes off with a heavy, groove based number that is oddly titled "BDBDBDBD". Overall, I think that "Reshredded" is a solid instrumental album. As of now...all I can say is this is a great CD that is well worth picking up if you are a fan of 80's/early 90's metal (not saying hair metal...I'm saying that great 80's metal sound...). Members of Saint, as well as Guitarhoops and others are on the CD also, so check it out!!! I like it more with each listen. It really brings back fond memories of the shred instrumental albums of the 80's and early 90's. You know, the Satriani's, the Vai's, the MacAlpine's, the Friedmans, the Becker's, etc. I am not saying Re-Sredded is a clone of anything like that, but if you really enjoyed putting on an album of blazing instrumental guitar virtuosity, man, you MUST pick this up. Arttie Parker The Christian Metal Realm Pastor Brad and his Shred series has arrived! I would put this disc up against any instrumental cd out there. There is so much going on here! Thanks to a bunch of killer guests who also play on this disc. PB wears his influences right on his sleeve. You can hear bits of Zeppelin, AC/DC, Iron Maiden and some cool shredding as well. There are some different styles on this one also I know the title screams SHRED but, that is only a part of the music on this. Some cool funky stuff and flashy guitar effects for lovers of 80's style metal. I love the spoken parts and sound- bytes mixed throughout. Sinai Daydreams is incredible. Go Irish is a must for any Notre Dame fan! Childlike Sweetness is very very upbeat feelgood track thats pays tribute to Guns n'Roses style of playing. Memory Lane is different than anything on the other two discs as well. I really do not think anyone will be disappointed in this at all. I think one day we will all be buying the SHRED Box set with live tracks from an all star jam...YEAH!! I don't see an end to this ha ha. Go to www.guitarjams.net and look up all of these guitar playes and see what they are all about but, before you do that--buy this cd! It does not take much to get me laughing & that song just cracked me up from the go! The guitarists featured on the cd are amazing. Dee & Rich (bass) are amazing.
